CENTRAL, S.C. – The Converse (6-36, 1-11 CC) was defeated by Southern Wesleyan (18-16, 11-7 CC) in a pair of Conference Carolinas softball games at Varsity Field on Friday afternoon. The Warriors took game one by the final of 6-1 before sweeping the series with a 4-0 win in game two.
GAME ONE: CONVERSE 1, SWU 6
Converse struck first with one run in the top of the first inning. Hailey Spitler reached on an error by the Warrior shortstop before stealing a base and coming in to score on a Gabrielle Cuevas RBI double. However, two consecutive strikeouts ended the threat and left the Vals with only one run.
After holding SWU scoreless in the first, the Warriors came back with a huge second inning, scoring five times on four hits, the bog blow coming off the bat of A. Martin, who homered to left for two RBIs.
Southern Wesleyan added one more run in the bottom of the fourth and held Converse off the board the rest of the way to take game one by the final of 6-1.
GAME TWO: CONVERSE 0, SWU 4
Both teams had trouble getting the offenses going to start game two, going scoreless over the initial 2.0 innings, while only obtaining three baserunners total. However, that changed in the bottom of the third as SWU struck for all four of its runs on five total hits.
From that point it was all academic as the game became a defensive battle once more. Converse failed to put a runner in scoring position the remainder of the game, eventually dropping the nightcap by the 4-0 final.
The Valkyries will be back in action on Thursday, April 11, hosting Erskine in a doubleheader at Tyger River Park. Game one is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
