Valkyries Pick Up First Conference Win After Split With Mount Olive

DUNCAN, S.C. – The Converse College (6-24, 1-5 CC) softball team picked up a split with Mount Olive (17-9, 3-1 CC) on Sunday afternoon at Tyger River Park and the Stadium. Converse earned a walk-off win by the final of 3-2 in game one before falling 9-2 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: CONVERSE 3, MOUNT OLIVE 2

After holding the Trojans scoreless in the top of the first, Converse put together a two runs in the bottom of the frame to take the early lead. The first two batters were retired before Gabrielle Cuevas singled to left to keep the inning alive. Allison Plafcan drew a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. Destiny Heard followed that with a double to deep right, allowing both runners to come around and touch the plate.

Mount Olive came back in the top of the fourth with two runs of its own, knotting the game at 2-2. Hannah Burress and Alexis Oliver came up with RBI hits during the at-bat for the Trojans.

That score remained until the bottom of the seventh. Meredith Quarles led the frame off with a single to center. The next two batters popped up to the infield and the Valkyries threat was dwindling. Marissa Martin hit a sharp comeback to the pitcher and Mount Olive looked poised to send the game into extra innings. However, a wide throw to first by the UMO pitcher allowed Courtney Walls, who was pinch running for Quarles, to come around and touch the plate for the Valkyrie win in walk-off fashion.

Hailey Spitler picked up her second win of the season after throwing 7.0 innings and allowing only two runs while scattering seven hits.

GAME TWO: CONVERSE 2, MOUNT OLIVE 9

Converse was once again the aggressor in game two, plating two runs in the top of the first to take an early advantage. After an out, Spitler singled up the middle and advanced to third after a botched pop up off the bat of Cuevas. Plafcan came through with a double over the center fielder's head, collecting two RBIs in the process.

Converse was poised to add another run to its lead in the bottom of the third after Spitler tripled to right center with one out. However, two consecutive punch-outs by the Trojans pitcher ended the threat. The Trojans capitalized on the missed opportunity, scoring four runs in the top of the fourth to take their first lead of the contest, 4-2.

Mount Olive scored three runs in the fifth, followed by single runs in the sixth and seventh to push out a commanding 9-2 lead heading into the bottom of the final inning for Converse. The Valkyries went scoreless, dropping game two by that score.

After a six-day hiatus Converse will return to Conference Carolinas action Saturday, March 23, hosting Emmanuel (Ga.) at Tyger River Park. The first game of that doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
