CONCORD, N.C. – Picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches' poll, the Converse College Cross Country team turned in an impressive performance at the 2017 Conference Carolinas Cross Country Championships on Friday morning, bringing home a respectable seventh-place finish.
"With the circumstances I think we did great", said head coach Brandon Morton.
Jane Macsay led the Valkyries with a solid top-20 finish, crossing the line in 25:22.3, while teammate Autumn Stone finished just behind her in 26th (25:44.0). Jamie Connelly, who has been a catalyst for the Purple and Gold throughout the season, turned in a time of 25:53.7, good enough for 30th.
Abigail Jolley (31:13.2) and Kathryn Frizzell (31:14.3) finished back-to-back in 54th and 55th places, respectively. Marie Smith tallied a time of 34:18.7 to round out the participants for Converse.
Mount Olive took home the team title, while the Trojans' Leah Hanle made it clean sweep for UMO, capturing the individual crown with a time of 22:52.9.
Morton added, "We lost some key members of our team this year and we were picked to finish 9th. Our girls showed a lot of character by competing the way they did. Coach Cord (Sgaglio) did a great job getting the girls ready. We are all very proud of them."
