SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Despite the beginnings of a comeback following the second set, the Converse Volleyball team (7-25, 2-12 CC) was defeated by Emmanuel (19-8, 13-1 CC) on home turf Thursday evening in a conference matchup.
Elizabeth Yohe produced an all-around game, collecting a double-double with 13 kills and a career-high 25 digs. Morgan Pearson notched nine kills, while teammate Sydney Allen matched Yohe with 25 digs. Lauren Tharrington provided the offense with 33 assists, her second-most output of the season.
Converse came out strong with relatively even exchanges of the opening points of the first set. However, a pair of attack errors from the Vals allowed the Lions to take a crucial 14-10 lead. Two kills by Elizabeth Yohe kept Converse in the match until Emmanuel pulled away at the conclusion of the set to win 25-22.
Looking to make up some ground, the Valkyries jumped out to quick 7-3 advantage in the second set. But a five point burst from the Lions put them right back into the game. Two four-point streaks extended Emmanuel's lead to 16-10 making a Converse win unlikely. But kills by Morgan Pearson, Kiara Cannon, and Kaylee Owens contributed to a five point run to put the Vals right back into the match taking an incredible 19-18 lead. After trading the following points, a final kill from Kiara Cannon secured the set 28-26 to tie the match 1-1.
Both teams looked strong in the initial points of the third set, battling out to an 8-8 tie, but the Lions raced ahead to a 20-13 lead, following a 12-5 spurt. The Valkyries scored just two more points before dropping the third set, 25-15.
Similar to the previous frame, the fourth set began with an even array of exchanges. Unfortunately, the Valkyries' effort was not enough to hold off the Lions for another set as the Lions plowed ahead to a 20-8 lead and eventually secured the 25-15 victory to win the match 3-1.
Converse will be back on the court on Saturday, November 3 as they host King University at Hannah Gymnasium in their final game of the 2018 fall season. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
