BANNER ELK, N.C. – Morgan Pearson collected a double-double with team highs in kills (12) and digs (16), but the Converse (5-21, 1-8 CC) volleyball team fell 3-1 to Lees-McRae (7-16, 3-5 CC) on Friday evening inside Williams Gymnasium. After the Vals took set one (25-22), LMC reeled off three consecutive sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-16) to capture the conference win.
The Valkyries were all business in the first set, racing out to a 7-3 advantage. However, LMC used a 10-5 run to take its first lead 13-12 midway through the opening frame. From that point the score would be tied on five occasions, but with the set even at 17-all, Converse used a 8-5 run over the remainder to capture the first set.
Set two belonged to the Bobcats. After Converse tied the contest at 4-4, LMC went on a massive 15-2 spurt to take complete control of the set. The Valkyries played from behind the remainder of the frame, eventually falling 25-15.
Lees-McRae continued the momentum into the next set, taking 12 of the first 16 points. That lead grew to double-digits (24-14), but back-to-back kills by Pearson followed by an error from LMC cut the deficit to 24-17. However, a service error gave the Bobcats the coveted 25th point and set win.
Much like the previous two frames, Lees-McRae came out of the gates fast to control the game, jumping out to a 17-8 lead. Following a kill by Cannon, the Bobcats tightened the grip, collecting five of the next seven points to pad their lead to double-digits (22-11). Converse continued to fight, using a 5-1 spurt to close the gap to 23-16, but LMC took the final two points of set four, capturing the match 3-1.
The Valkyries will return to action tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Belmont, N.C. to participate in a tri-match. Converse will face Belmont Abbey at 2 p.m. before stepping out of conference to take on Piedmont International at 4 p.m.
