SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Valkyries volleyball team fell to King (Tenn.) (10-12, 5-6 CC) by the score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon inside Hannah Gymnasium. The Tornado was able to defeat Converse (4-20, 1-12 CC) 25-21, 25-14, and 25-23.
Journee English led the way for the Purple and Gold with seven kills, while Kaylee Owens and Kenzie Schmaltz added five each. Lauren Tharrington chipped in 12 assists and Jordan Mrkvicka anchored the defense with 19 digs.
The two teams traded the initial 18 points of set one before Converse reeled off three straight to go up 12-9 early. However, that lead did not last long as King used a 7-0 run to regain the lead at 16-12. An English kill late in the frame cut the deficit to one (22-21), but KU tallied three in a row to take the set 25-21 and go up 1-0 in the match.
A close set of 9-8 in favor of the Tornado quickly turned into a comfortable 18-10 lead following a 9-2 spurt from the visitors. The Valkyries could not get any traction on offense the remainder of the set and fell behind 2-0 in the match with a 25-14 set two loss.
King jumped out to a 7-2 lead in frame three and that advantage grew to 14-7 midway through. With the score at 21-15 Tyra Murray entered the game and managed to rip off three straight points from the service line to trim the gap to 21-18. Three of five points by King put the Vals backs against the wall as they face match point. Mrkvicka was able to bring CC to within 24-23, but a kill by Kayley Holtzclaw ended the set 25-23 and the match, 3-0.
Converse will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as it welcomes the Bobcats of Lees-McRae to the Weisiger Center. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
