SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Freshman libero Sydney Allen posted a career-high 38 digs, but it was not enough as the Converse College (3-19) volleyball team dropped a thrilling five-set affair to Bluefield College (18-11) on Saturday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center.
After Converse took the initial point of set one, Bluefield ran off a massive 18-4 run to take a commanding 18-5 lead in the opening frame, forcing a timeout by the Vals. Following the stoppage BC ran out to a 23-10 lead before Ansley Hodge used masterful serving to reel off five straight for the Vals, but the deficit was too much as the Rams took set one by the final of 25-16.
Converse was aggressive early in the second set, jumping out to a 6-4 lead, but a 6-0 spurt from Bluefield put the Rams in front 10-6. That lead ballooned to 16-7 forcing a timeout by Converse. Unfortunately, the brief hiatus did nothing in terms of momentum as BC collected four of five points to sit ahead 20-8.
Lauren Tharrington tried to get the Valkyries back in the match with six-straight from the service line, but once again the gap was too wide and BC took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 set two victory.
Converse came out on fire in set three, killing its way to a comfortable 8-2 lead, this time causing the Rams to burn an early timeout. A steady attack game by CC pushed the lead to double-digits (19-9) and that was all that the Vals needed to force game four with nice comeback set three win (25-16).
The Valkyries took the newfound momentum into the fourth set, pounding the ball into the floor on their way to a quick 5-2 advantage. That lead grew to 11-6 following a massive kill from Hodge. Converse continued to put pressure on the Rams defense with a steady attack game and a stingy net defense. However, the Vals would not be denied a fifth and decisive set as they pulled out the 25-19 frame win.
Unfortunately, the Valkyries ran out of gas in the fifth set and were denied the come-from-behind victory, falling in the final set by the final of 15-9.
Converse will be back in action on Tuesday, October 24 as it plays host to Bob Jones University. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
