SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College (3-18, 1-11 CC) volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the visiting Limestone Saints (5-11, 5-6 CC) on Friday afternoon inside the Weisiger Center. The Saints were able to earn the sweep with set scores of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-17.
Kenzie Schmaltz led the Valkyries with a team-high eight kills, while Journee English added seven in the loss. Kassie Burkett chipped in four kills. Libero Sydney Allen collected 11 digs and Lauren Tharrington dished out 13 assists. Rycki Ebert led Limestone with a game-high 12 kills.
Set one was nip-and-tuck until around the halfway point when Limestone took a slim 9-7 advantage and turned it into a commanding 20-13 lead following an 11-6 run. That lead grew to nine when a kill by the Saints Victoria Norwood gave LC the 1-0 match lead with a 25-16 frame final.
Limestone owned the second frame after jumping out to a double-digit lead (16-6) early on. Converse fought back to narrow the gap to 22-17, but the deficit was too much as Limestone took set two 25-17 and a 2-0 match lead.
Set three was more evenly played as the Valkyries tried to force a fourth set. However, with the score at 16-15 in favor of the guests, LC reeled off nine of the next 11 points to seal the deal and take the third set by the final of 25-17 and the match 3-0.
The Valkyries will return to the court tomorrow at 2 p.m. as they welcome the Rams of Bluefield College to Hannah Gymnasium for a non-conference tilt.
