SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College (1-11, 0-4 CC) volleyball dropped a 3-1 decision to Emmanuel College (5-5, 3-0 CC) on Tuesday evening to open its home schedule. The Valkyries fell by set scores of 21-25, 25-16, 19-25, and 14-25.
Kenzie Schmaltz registered 11 kills to go along with 10 digs, notching her second double-double of the season, while Kiara Cannon chipped in a season-high eight kills. Sydney Allen tallied 20 digs while Krislyn Moore and Jordan Mrkvicka amassed 15 and 10 assists, respectively.
Converse came out hot in front of its home crowd, jumping out to a fast 4-0 lead early in set one, but a 13-9 margin for Emmanuel knotted the frame halfway through. From that point there were four lead changes until the Lions took a 17-all tie and scored eight of the next 12 to seize a 1-0 match lead.
The Valkyries used an early 11-7 run to take the early lead in set two, but an unforced error coupled with a 6-2 EC run balanced the set at 13 each. A kill from Mia McKensey for Emmanuel made the score 16-15 in favor of the home team and then Converse, fueled by masterful serving and stingy net defense, reeled off nine of 10 to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 frame victory.
Unfortunately, that would be the only set Converse carried, dropping the next two in order by the finals of 25-19 and 25-14.
Julie Le Blanck led the Lions with a game-high 16 kills while Stephanie Hardy dished out 38 assists. Aysha Avery finished the night with 22 digs.
Converse will be back in action on Friday, September 22 as it plays host to Erskine. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
