WILSON, N.C. – The Valkyries were upended in straight sets by the Barton Bulldogs (5-6, 1-0 CC) on Friday evening. Converse (1-9, 0-2) fell by the set scores of 11-25, 20-25, and 18-25).
Set one started out very competitive as Barton snuck out to a minimal 7-4 advantage. However, a 6-1 run by the Bulldogs extended the lead to 13-5. That mark grew to nine (19-10) before BC finished the set with another 6-1 burst, taking a 1-0 match lead with a 25-11 first set win.
After an unforced error by Barton tied the second set at three-all, the Bulldogs went on a 13-2 scoring run to push ahead by a comfortable 16-5 mark. However, Converse did not go quietly, battling back to within three (21-18) following a 13-5 run of its own, fueled by a steady attack game as a plethora of Valkyries were able to contribute a point at the net. Unfortunately, the deficit proved to be too much as Barton took a commanding 2-0 match lead with a 25-20 set two victory.
The third set was a frame of runs as each team played match with the other. Barton went ahead 5-3 before a kill from Journee English and an attack error by the Bulldogs evened the contest at 5-5. Barton then used four straight points to push ahead 9-5, but Converse answered back with a 5-1 burst, tying the set at 10 each.
Barton took three more in a row, running the lead to 13-10, a lead it would not relinquish. Converse went flat on offense and eventually dropped set three by the score of 25-18 and the match, 3-0.
The Valkyries will make the quick turnaround as they travel to Mount Olive to take on the Trojans tomorrow afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m.
