Valkyries Come Up Short Against Crusaders

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Converse Volleyball team fell on Senior Day to Belmont Abbey in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon, 3-0.

Converse's offense was led by senior JaLesa Beaver with a match-high eight kills.  Kayla Pettit recorded six kills and six digs. 

Deanna Unger notched a double-double in the match with 16 assists and a match-high 13 digs.  Vivica Nogueira notched double-figure digs with 10.

1st Set 

Converse fell behind early in the first set 10-3. The Valkyries would rally out of the timeout to knot things at 11-all.  Journee English started the run with a kill followed by JaLesa Beaver's kill. Beaver would notch another kill before English served up a service ace to tie things up.

Belmont Abbey used an 8-0 to take hold of the set at 19-11 and took the set 25-17. Kayla Pettit recorded two kills in the final six points of the set for the Valkyries.

2nd Set

Belmont Abbey doubled up the Valkyries at 10-5 and pushed their lead to 16-10 before Converse was able to cut into the deficit. Alexis Pitts started the run with a kill followed by back-to-back Crusader errors. Kayla Pettit posted a kill to bring the contest within two, 16-14.

A kill by Journee English would allow Converse to keep the contest close at 19-17 before the Crusaders finished off the set on a 6-0 run.

3rd Set

The Crusaders used an early lead in the third set to push out in front. Converse rallied back to cut things to 13-10 after a kill by JaLesa Beaver. Both teams added three points each to the score before a 9-2 run to end the match.


Converse ends the season with a 2-22 overall record and 1-15 record in league play.  Jenna Brock and JaLesa Beaver were recognized before the contest.
