SUMTER, S.C. – Freshman Martha Quattlebaum became the first Valkyrie to win a singles draw on Sunday afternoon during the final day of the Palmetto Tennis Center Invitational. Quattlebaum had no trouble with her opponent, Erskine's Larissa Brutschin, dismissing the Flying Fleet member in straight sets (6-1, 6-4).
Quattlebaum did not drop a single set over the three-day event, only going to extra points during her first set on the opening day against Alexandra Golliher on Friday.
"I'm so proud of Martha," said head coach Katie Mancebo. "She is a hard worker and always has a great attitude. Her efforts paid off this weekend."
The consolation matches scheduled for Sunday afternoon were cancelled due to inclement weather. Quattlebaum and the rest of the Valkyries will return to action on Thursday, October 25 as they travel to Western N.C. to take on Mars Hill. That contest is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
