SUMTER, S.C. – The Converse College tennis team competed in the Palmetto Tennis Center Invitational on Friday, October 12. During the day the Valkyries took home several wins in the doubles and singles competition.
On the singles side, Belen Vendrell got the day started in the women's open singles B with a big win over Felicitas Picinini of Limestone by scores of 5-7, 7-5, 1-0. Pauline Hagen also captured a victory in the bracket, defeating Ada Vargas of Barton, 6-2, 1-6, 1-0.
Martha Quattlebaum took down Alexandra Golliher of Southern Wesleyan in the C bracket with set scores of 7-5, 6-4. Anika Kelley also picked up a win for the Purple and Gold after defeating Emmanuel's Igrid Martinez by walkover.
Steffi Kong dropped a three-set affair to Cynthia Carrier of Chowan. After falling in the first set 6-0, Kong bounced back to take set two by the final of 7-5 before ultimately falling 1-0 in the tiebreaker. Snighda Musugunthan and Taylor Parrott were defeated in straight sets during their singles matchups with Laura Aholu and Alexandra Dolfi, respectively.
Musungunthan then teamed up with Quattlebaum to defeat Emmanuel's Maria Raich and Victoria Silva, 6-4. Hagen and Vendrell continued their winning ways on the day, this time as a team, dropping Carlie Davis and Jessica Pienta of Belmont Abbey by the final of 7-6 (2).
Converse will be back in action tomorrow morning for the second and concluding day of the Palmetto Tennis Center Inivitational.
