SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (0-5, 0-3 CC) College soccer team was dealt a 4-0 loss at the hands of Belmont Abbey (5-0, 1-0 CC) on Thursday evening at Fulp Field. The Crusaders tacked on a goal in the opening minutes and led the rest of the way to earn the victory.
Belmont Abbey struck early when Morgan Patton took a lead pass and snuck it past the Valkyries keeper in just the 6th minute of action. From that point the Vals turned up the defense, playing with an aggressive edge while spending the majority of the next 15-plus minutes on the offensive end. However, Converse could not push across the equalizer.
The missed opportunity by the Purple and Gold allowed BAC to extend its lead with a late first half goal by Tallee Zamiela, sending the Valkyries into the halftime intermission trailing 2-0.
Converse came out aggressive in the second half, putting several shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Once again Abbey capitalized on the misfortunes of the Vals, posting a pair of goals in the 63rd and 77th minute to push out to a 4-0 advantage with less than 15 minutes to play.
The remainder of the game was a stalemate and Belmont Abbey took home the conference win, 4-0.
The Valkyries will be back in action on Saturday, September 22 as they play host to Albany St. at Hayden Abney Fulp Field. Kickoff for that contest is scheduled for 2 p.m.
