Valkyries Come Up Short Against Newberry In Season Opener

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Converse College lacrosse team (0-1) opened the 2019 season with a nail-biting 10-8 loss to Newberry (1-0) on Wednesday evening. The Valkyries took a 6-5 lead into the half, but was outscored 5-2 in the second half to suffer the defeat.

Midfielder Tyra Murray led the Purple and Gold with three goals, while Sharlize Burgos and Flore Samsi added two each. Samsi added six draw controls and Burgos came away with five ground balls.

The initial seven minutes of the contest was a stalemate as neither team could find the back of the net. However, Newberry scored two goals in less than a minute to take the early 2-0 lead with 23:23 remaining in the opening half. Murray came right back with her first score of the season in the 21st minute, but the Wolves extended back out to a two-goal lead three minutes later.

After trading the next pair of goals, Converse used a 4-0 run, capped off by a Samsi unassisted goal, to take its first lead at 6-4 with 3:24 to go before halftime. Newberry trimmed the deficit to a single point after adding a score just before the intermission.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair as the two teams exchanged the first four goals. However, with the score at 8-7 in favor of the Vals, Newberry ripped off three unanswered goals to escape with the 10-8 win.

Converse will be back in action on Saturday, February 16, traveling to take on the Hawks of Chowan University. That contest is scheduled to begin at noon.
