WILSON, N.C. – Senior attack Brittni Jones continued her record-setting season, collecting a program record 10 goals to help lead the Converse (6-11, 4-6 CC) lacrosse team to a 16-15 win over Barton (5-9, 3-7CC) College on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs led 11-9 after the first 30 minutes of play, but CC used a stellar defense in the second half, outscoring Barton 7-4.
Ashlei Alston got the scoring started for Converse with an unassisted goal at the 26:20 mark of the first period before Jones started her scoring frenzy a little over a minute later to double the lead at 2-0. However, a 5-1 run by the Bulldogs gave Barton a 5-3 advantage with 17 minutes to play before halftime.
Aubrie Lauderdale connected on her first score to trim the deficit to 5-4 before Jones contributed three consecutive goals, reclaiming the lead for Converse at 7-5 at the 13:38 point. Back-to-back goals by BC knotted the contest at 7-all, but Jones and Sharlize Burgos connected on two goals in a row to push Converse back out in front (9-7). Barton used a 4-0 run over the final 6:49 of the first period to take an 11-9 lead into the break.
Katherine Goldfuss initiated the scoring in half number two, firing a shot past the keeper to pull the Valkyries to within a single goal (11-10). However, Barton extended its lead to 13-10 with two straight scores before Jones and Alston posted two goals each during a 4-0 run that spanned a little over five minutes of game time to reestablish the lead for CC (14-13) with 17:44 remaining in regulation.
Barton's Brooke Lonergan and Aryanna Fahnestock scored on back-to-back possessions, giving the Bulldogs a 15-14 lead late in the second half. Fortunately, Jones was not done with her scoring onslaught and posted two straight netters, including the game-winner with 16 ticks on the clock to give the Valkyries the hard-fought 16-15 win.
With the win the Valkyries earn the No. 6 seed in the 2018 Conference Carolinas Women's Lacrosse Championships. Converse will travel to Belmont Abbey on Wednesday, April 25 to take on the Crusaders in the quarterfinals. Game time for that contest has yet to be announced.
