SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Junior attacker Maria Knott scored a career-high five times to help guide the Converse (5-11, 3-6 CC) lacrosse team to a pivotal 20-6 win over Southern Wesleayn (0-13, 0-9 CC) on Tuesday evening at Fulp Field.
Brittni Jones got the scoring started with a goal just 27 seconds into the contest, but SWU's Abigail Welch knotted the score at 1-1 with a goal of her own at the 27:31 mark. Maria Knott sparked a 3-0 Converse scoring run after taking a pass from Aubrie Lauderdale and placing it into the back of the net.
Back-to-back goals by Skylar Taylor cut the Valkyries lead to 4-3, but a massive 7-0 burst to end the half sent Converse into locker room leading 11-3. During the run Lauderdale tacked on three goals, while Jones added two more to her first half total. Sharlize Burgos and Ashlei Alston also added one score each.
Half number two started just as the first with each team trading the initial pair of goals before the Valkyries reeled off five in a row to take a commanding lead at 17-4. During the scoring outburst, four different players contributed a goal for the Purple and Gold.
Southern Wesleyan put a halt to the run at 5-0 with a goal at the 8:54 mark, but Converse outscored the Warriors 3-1 down the stretch to pull out the 20-6 conference win.
Jones led the Valkyries with seven goals, adding to her own scoring record, while Lauderdale found the back of the net four times. Alston added a pair of scores while Burgos and Samsi chipped in one goal each. Caitlin Johnson played all 60 minutes between the pipes, earning her 5th win of the season, allowing six goals and gathering seven saves.
The Valkyries will close out the regular season on Saturday, April 21 as they travel to Wilson, N.C. to take on Barton. First draw control is scheduled for 4 p.m.
