DUE WEST, S.C. – Senior attack Brittni Jones scored eight goals to set the new scoring record for the Converse (4-11, 2-6 CC) lacrosse team, while leading the Valkyries to a dominant 21-10 win over Erskine (2-11, 2-8 CC) on Saturday afternoon. Jones now has 55 goals on the season and 115 for her career to set the new standard for the Purple and Gold. CC used a strong second half (9-2) to capture its second conference win of the season.
Aubrie Lauderdale chipped in four goals for the Vals, while Sharlize Burgos and Ashlei Alston added two scores each. Eight different players recorded a goal for Converse. Victoria Bailey picked three grounballs while Caitlin Johnson collected seven saves after playing all 60 minutes between the pipes.
Jones got the Valkyries on the board first with back-to-back goals in the first 3:10 of the contest. After Faith Flanagan cut the lead in half for the Trojans, Converse used a 5-1 run 9-plus minutes of game time to run out to a 7-2 advantage. During the burst, five different players posted a score for the Purple and Gold.
Erskine tallied two consecutive goals, narrowing the gap to 7-4, but three straight from Converse, including one goal each from Katherine Goldfuss, Daija Krygier, and Lauderdale, pushed the lead back out to 10-4. The Flying Fleet outscored the Valkyries 4-2 over the final 10:49 of the opening period to head into intermission trailing 12-8.
The Valkyries blew the game wide open with the first six goals of the second half, fueled by Jones' three netters, to balloon the lead to 18-8. Maria Knott capped the run with a free position goal at the 24:03 mark. The remainder of the game was smooth sailing for the Valkyries as they closed out the 21-10 win, outscoring EC 3-2 down the stretch.
Converse will return to the field on Tuesday, April 17 as it plays host to Southern Wesleyan University, a game that was rescheduled from earlier in the year. That contest is set to start at 6 p.m.
