Early Deficit Dooms Converse In Loss to Belmont Abbey

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (2-6, 0-4 CC) lacrosse team dropped a home Conference Carolinas contest to visiting Belmont Abbey (4-2, 1-0 CC) on Wednesday afternoon at Fulp Field. The Crusaders used a big first half to down the Valkyries by the final of 18-5.

Belmont Abbey scored early and often in the first half, tallying the game's first eight goals just 11 minutes into the contest. Sharlize Burgos put an end to that run with a free position goal at the 17:28 mark, cutting the deficit to 8-1. However, BAC outscored Converse 4-1 over the remaining opening period to head to halftime leading 12-2.

That lead ballooned to 13-2 after a goal from Abbey's Kathering Haenlein a little over a minute into the second stanza. Brittni Jones answered that score with an unassisted goal of her own two minutes later. Belmont Abbey posted two more goals at the 24:36 and 22:32 points to extend the advantage to 15-3 before Jones connected on another score with 20:27 on the clock.

However, the Crusaders gained their biggest lead of the contest (18-4) with a 3-0 scoring run over the next 11+ minutes of game time. Aubrie Lauderdale chipped in the final goal of the contest for either team at the 7:32 mark, pushing the final score to 18-5.

Jones led the Valkyries with three goals on five shots, while Lauderdale hauled in four groundballs. Flore Samsi had a great game on the defensive end as she collected three caused turnovers to go along with five draw controls.

The Valkyries will be back in action as they step out of conference on Tuesday, March 13, welcoming Wilmington (Del.) to Fulp Field. First draw control is tentatively scheduled for 3 p.m.
