Converse Drops 17-8 Decision to Coker

Converse Drops 17-8 Decision to Coker

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Sharlize Burgos and Ashlei Alston scored three goals each but it was not enough as the Converse (1-3) lacrosse team fell to Coker (2-1) by the final of 17-8 on Friday evening at the Coker Athletic Field. The Cobras used a strong second half (10-4) to run away with what was a close game over the initial 30 minutes of action.

Aubrie Lauderdale tallied the only other two goals for the Purple and Gold while Victoria Bailey and Alston picked up a team-high three groundballs each. A trio of Valkyries collected two caused turnovers apiece. Caitlyn Johnson played all 60 minutes in goal, recording seven goals while giving up the 17 goals.

Katie Driskell got the Cobras on the board first with a man-up goal at the 25:36 mark of the first half, but Lauderdale knotted the contest at 1-1 with a score of her own from a free position shot just over three minutes later. After Coker took the lead 2-1, Converse posted two consecutive scores, one from Burgos and the other from Alston, less than a minute apart to take its first lead (3-2) halfway through the first 30.

Unfortunately, Coker outscored the Valkyries 5-1 over the remainder of the first to take a 7-4 lead into halftime. That lead grew to 10-4 as the Cobras connected on the first three goals coming out of the brief intermission. An unassisted Burgos goal at the 20:57 mark put an end to the run, but Coker followed that score with five in a row to extend to a double-digit lead (15-5) with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

Converse scored three of the next five goals to cut the deficit to 17-8, but that was as close as the score got as the Valkyries fell by that same margin.

Haley McCusker led the all players with seven goals while Faith Kent added five in the win. Cassie Williams went the distance in goal to earn the win, giving up eight goals and tallying nine saves.

Converse will return to action on Wednesday, February 28 as it travels to Gaffney, S.C. to take on nationally ranked Limestone. That contest is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. at Saints Field.
