FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Converse (1-2, 0-1 CC) lacrosse team came up on the losing end of a 20-8 score against Emmanuel (1-1, 1-0 CC) on Tuesday evening at the Stephens Athletic Complex. The Lions used a strong 13-4 first half to wrestle the victory away from the Vals in both team's conference opener.
Brittni Jones led the Purple and Gold with four goals while Aubrie Lauderdale chipped in three scores of her own. Cassandra Bravo and Sharlize Burgos collected two groundballs each. Emmanuel held a slight 27-23 lead in shots and scored three goals on extra man opportunities.
Emmanuel opened the contest scoring the first eight goals to build a sizeable lead with 12 minutes evaporated from the game clock. The Valkyries finally got on the board at the 14:17 mark of the opening period when Lauderdale took a pass from Maria Knott and found the back of the cage, cutting the Lions lead to 8-1.
After an Emmanuel goal Jones scored on back-to-back possessions to trim the deficit to 9-3 with 11:12 remaining on the clock before halftime. However, the Lions outscored the Valkyries 5-0 down the stretch to take a 14-3 lead into the intermission.
The two teams traded goals to open the second half before two quick scores from Converse made the score 15-7. Unfortunately, that was as close as the score would get as Emmanuel used a 5-1 run to end the contest and secure the 20-8 victory.
Tara Larson led the Lions with six scores while Ellie Friese contributed five goals. Caitlyn Johnson played all 60 minutes in goal and collected seven saves.
Converse will be back in action on Friday, February 23 as it travels to Hartsville, S.C. to take on the Cobras of Coker College. First draw control is scheduled for 6 p.m.
