Valkyries Lacrosse Drop See-Saw Contest To Emmanuel

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In a battle of the nation's leading goal scorers, the Converse Lacrosse team came up short against Emmanuel 20-17 in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Elizabeth Gabriele notched her fourth hat-trick of the season while scoring a career-high six goals.  Gabriele added two assists.

The nation's leading goal scorer coming into the contest, Laura Starkes, scored her eighth hat-trick of the season with four goals on the afternoon.  Starkes brought her total to 40 goals on the season.

Kasey Halodik and Brittni Jones recorded two goals each.  Alshei Alston tallied a career-high three assists.

Myka Jones fell to 2-2 on the season in cage with a career-high 17 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Half

Converse jumped on the scoreboard quickly with a goal by Laura Starkes off the pass from Elizabeth Gabriele just 1:11 into the contest.

Emmanuel responded less than 15 seconds later to knot things at 1-all.

Free position goals by Elizabeth Gabriele, Laura Starkes, and Kasey Halodik gave the Valkyries a 4-1 advantage forcing a Emmanuel timeout.

Coming out of the timeout, Emmanuel went on a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 6-4.

Ashlei Alston controlled the draw and found a wide open Jessi Walters to stop the Lions' run.  Two quick goals by Emmanuel pushed their advantage to 8-5 with 15:02 to play in the half.

Three straight Converse goals knotted the contest at 8-all with 8:46 remaining in the half.  Alshei Alston tallied an unassisted goal to spark the run.  Elizabeth Gabriele off the pass from Aubrie Lauderdale and Laura Starkes from Gabriele tied it at eight.

Converse surrendered a goal before rattling off four straight goals to lead 12-9.  Victoria Bailey found a cutting Elizabeth Gabriele for the score.  Brittni Jones and Laura Starkes scored unassisted followed by Kaitlin Milde scoring on a free position gave the Valkyries a 12-9 advantage with 3:28 to play in the half.

Emmanuel cut into the deficit before half scoring twice.  Converse went into the locker room with a 12-11 lead.

2nd Half

Out of halftime, Emmanuel took the lead for good, 14-12, with three straight goals.

Converse would battle back to cut it to a one goal contest on three seperate occasions.  Kasey Halodik netted a free position goal to cut it to 14-13.

Emmanuel pushed it back to a two goal contest before Elizabeth Gabriele scored off an Ashlei Alston pass cutting it back to a one goal contest.

Elizabeth Gabriele and Ashlei Alston teamed up once again down by two goals to bring the game to within one, 16-15.

Back-to-back Emmanuel goals pushed the advantage out to three, 18-15, with 22:49 to play.

Brittni Jones (free position) and Elizabeth Gabriele scored for the Valkyries but were unable to close the gap.
