Valkyries Lacrosse Bounce Back With Win In League Opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Behind a career night from Brittni Jones, the Converse Lacrosse team opened up Conference Carolinas play with a win over Erskine, 14-9 in a weather shortened contest on Wednesday evening.

Converse led 14-9 with 5:58 remaining in regulation when the contest was called due to inclement weather rolling through the area.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE

Brittni Jones scored a career-high six goals for her second hat-trick of the season.  Elizabeth Gabriele netted a hat-trick with four goals, with three coming in the first half.  Laura Starkes continued to add to her nation-leading goals with another hat-trick bringing her total to 27 on the season.

Laura Starkes added three assists, with Aubrie Lauderdale tallying two assists and Elizabeth Gabriele, Jessi Walters and Brittni Jones posting one assist.

Tyra Murray caused five turnovers, while the team caused 14 total.  Myka Jones recorded her first collegiate win in cage posting three saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Half

Converse and Erskine started off swapping goals in the first 10 minutes of action.  Laura Starkes found the back of the net first for the Valkyries off the pass from Elizabeth Gabriele.

Brittni Jones scored an unassisted goal to take the lead 2-1.  Erskine would regain the lead at 4-2 before Converse ended the half on a 5-0 run.  The Fleet would never regain the lead.

Back-to-back free position goals by Laura Starkes netted her a first-half hat-trick and knotted the score up at 4-all.

Brittni Jones would be on the receiving end of a Laura Starkes pass with 4:58 remaining in the half to take the lead for good at 5-4.  Jones returned the favor with an assist to Elizabeth Gabriele just 13 seconds later.  Jones would net her first-half hat-trick off the dish from Jessi Walters to give the Valkyries a 7-4 advantage heading into the break.

2nd Half

Erskine would chip away at the Valkyries' lead with two goals coming out of the break to trim the deficit to 7-6.

Aubrie Lauderdale found Elizabeth Gabriele wide open in the middle of the attacking area for the goal to push the lead back to 8-6.

After an Erskine free position goal, Brittni Jones and Aubrie Lauderdale gave the Valkyries some cushion on back-to-back goals.

Erskine cut the deficit to 11-9 with 11:44 to play in regulation, but Converse would score three more goals to take the win.  Elizabeth Gabriele scored back-to-back goals off assists from Laura Starkes and Aubrie Lauderdale.  Brittni Jones scored the final goal for Converse.

The contest would come to a hault with 5:58 remaining in regulation as thunder storms rolled into the Upstate.
