Defense Stays Strong In Rout Against Montreat

BLACK MOUNTAIN, N.C.- Behind the defense posting a program-low one goal, the Converse Lacrosse team dominated Montreat 20-1 on the road in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

Four Valkyries posted hat-tricks in the win.  Laura Starkes scored a career-high seven goals with six goals coming in the second half.  Starkes' seven goals is tied for second most in program history in a single game.

Elizabeth Gabriele scored four goals with a hat-trick in the first half.  Gabriele added two assists.  Aubrie Lauderdale and Kasey Halodik recorded a hat-trick apiece.  Halodik tallied two assists, while Lauderdale recorded a career-high 10 groundballs.

Jessi Walters picked up the win in the cage allowing one goal and picking up three saves.  Jada Jeter came off the bench to record three groundballs.

Converse posted a season-high 53 groundballs after forcing Montreat to turn the ball over 25 times.  Converse was 21-24 on clear attempts.


1st Half

Converse jumped on the scoreboard early with Elizabeth Gabriele scoring just 1:14 into the contest off the assist from Kasey Halodik.  Gabriele returned the favor assisting on Aubrie Lauderdale's goal less than a minute later.

Ashlei Alston would net a goal on a free position shot.  36 seconds later, Aubrie Lauderdale netted her second goal off the dish from Laura Starkes.

Elizabeth Gabriele notched her first half hat-trick scoring back-to-back goal on a free position shot and an unassisted goal.  Laura Starkes scored on a free position shot 38 seconds later to give the Valkyries a 7-0 advantage midway through the half.

Brittni Jones scored her lone goal of the contest at the 3:18 mark of the half off a pass from Kasey Halodik

Kaitlin Milde scored an unassisted goal with nine seconds remaining in the half to give Converse a 9-0 lead heading into the break.

2nd Half

Kasey Halodik made the contest a running clock just 1:12 into the second half on an unassisted goal to give Converse a comfortable 10-0 lead.

Laura Starkes posted back-to-back goals on an unassisted goal and a man-up free position goal to extend the lead to 12-0.

Montreat would score in the contest to break up the shutout.

Converse continued their scoring with two unassisted goals by Aubrie Lauderdale and Kasey Halodik.

The Cavaliers defense had to play a man-down for the final 18 minutes of the half allowing Converse to notch six man-advantage goals.

Laura Starkes would tally four more goals to add to her season total of 23.  Elizabeth Gabriele and Kasey Halodik notched goals to end the scoring.


Converse returns home to face Tampa in a non-conference tilt on Sunday, February 26.  Opening draw is at 12pm.
