HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Converse College golf team braved inclement weather en route to a stellar first round performance at the Coker Spring Invitational at the Hartsville Country Club. Periods of freezing rain did not stop the Valkyries from turning in a team total of 315 (+27), good enough for third place overall, trailing Erskine by two strokes and Newberry by five.
Grace Magera led the Purple and Gold after firing an 18-hole score of 77 (+5) to finish her opening round in a tie for fourth overall, while Marisa Daquil Kawabe posted a season-best 78 (+6) to enter the clubhouse tied for seventh. Magera tallied the lone birdie on the afternoon for Converse and shot even par or better on 14 of 18 holes.
Taylor Lance from Newberry leads the individuals following her 3-over, 75. The second and final round will begin tomorrow at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start.
