SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (9-18, 5-14) basketball team pushed Barton (20-7, 15-4) to the limit on Tuesday evening inside Hannah Gymnasium, but fell to the Bulldogs by the final of 59-46. The Valkyries shook off a cold shooting performance in the first half to outscore BC 35-29 in the second half.
Abigail Lewis was the top scorer for the Valkyries, posting a team-high 11 points while Dominique Hill had one of her best offensive performances of the season, dropping 10 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Tatum Boggs tallied eight points and five boards.
The Valkyries shot only 29% (16-55) for the contest, including 2-of-11 from beyond the arc, but held Barton to a season-low 33% (21-63) from the floor. Rebounds were deadlocked at 44 while Converse turned the ball over 24 times to Barton's 18.
A pair of free throws by Dinah Neal gave the Bulldogs an early lead, but back-to-back layups by Lewis and Briana Hill put the Purple and Gold in front 4-2 with 5:44 left in the opening quarter. However, an 11-0 run by BC gave the Bulldogs breathing room at 13-4 before heading into the second leading 15-8.
The second quarter was forgettable for the Valkyries as they managed a season-low three points in the frame, while Barton matched its first frame output of 15 and went into the locker room leading 30-11.
Two quick layups by Lewis and one by D. Hill to start the third pulled the Vals to within 30-17 with 7:33 on the clock. A three-pointer by Tatyana Jackson pushed the lead back to 33-17, but Converse used an 8-2 run to pull within 10 (35-25) with just over five minutes remaining in the third period. Unfortunately, Barton outscored the Valkyries 11-4 the remainder of the frame and led 46-29 going into the final stanza.
That lead ballooned to as many as 22 (59-37), but Converse used a 9-0 run over the next four and a half minutes of game action to bring the score to the final of 59-46.
Kianna Wynn led all scorers with a game-high 22 points while Shanika Peterkin pulled down 11 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Converse will be back in action on Friday, February 23 as it plays host to league-leading Limestone. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will also be senior night.
