SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College basketball team will hold its annual Substance Abuse Awareness Game on Saturday, February 10 when it plays host to the Erskine Flying Fleet. All persons in attendance are encouraged to wear red in support of the Valkyries fight against substance abuse.
Substance abuse is a silent killer and has claimed the life of more than 120,000 since 2016. In lieu of admission all money collected will go directly to the Ellen 23 Foundation. There will also be a chance to make a donation to the foundation and any size contribution will be happily accepted.
The Ellen 23 Foundation was created to honor the spirit and heart of Ellen Petty. Ellen's brief life of 23 years was tragically taken from an accidental alcohol and drug overdose. The goal of the foundation is to raise awareness of this large epidemic that crosses all races, economic status', genders and finds its way into the smallest of towns to the large cities throughout our nation. The foundation will raise awareness through education, sports, and love.
Robin Griffith, mother of former Converse basketball player Ellen Petty, will share her message and testimony during halftime of the contest.
