Cold Shooting Plagues Valkyries In Loss to Emmanuel

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, GA. – The Converse (8-15, 4-11 CC) basketball team dropped an 80-60 decision at the hands of Emmanuel (13-7, 8-6 CC) College on Tuesday afternoon.

Brianna James led the way for the Valkyries after posting 17 points to go along with nine rebounds, while Paige Johnson chipped in 10 points. Abigail Lewis and Rebecca Travis added seven points each. The points for Travis are a career-high. Converse struggled from the floor after shooting only 28.1% (18-64), including 8-of-32 from three-point range.

Offense was hard to come by in the early minutes of quarter one as the two teams were tied at 2-2 with 6:55 left on the clock. Emmanuel held a slim 10-8 lead, but used a 6-0 run to end the frame, taking a16-8 lead into the second.

That lead grew to 22-10 following a layup by Emily Dreslinksi but back-to-back threes from James and Tatum Boggs cut the lead in half (22-16) with just under five minutes to play before halftime. After a Johnson deep ball trimmed the margin to 26-21, Emmanuel went on a 10-2 run to take a 36-23 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter belonged to the Lions as they outscored Converse 22-10. The Valkyries managed just 1-of-17 field goals in the quarter. The fourth quarter was a different story as they shots that were being missed in the third started to fall in the final session. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late as Emmanuel completed the season sweep with an 80-60 victory.

Converse will return to the friendly confines of Hannah Gymnasium on Saturday, February 10 as it plays host to Erskine College in a pivotal Conference Carolinas showdown. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
