HOW IT HAPPENED
James knocked down a triple to start the scoring for the Purple and Gold, but the Valkyries would fall behind 15-4 early following a 15-1 run by the Lions.
The Valkyries found their groove on offense over the next three minutes of action, reeling off an 11-0 run of their own, capped off by a Sides three-ball to knot the contest at 15-all with just over two minutes to play in the first session. A pair of free throws by Hanna Grogan gave EC a 20-18 lead after one.
Converse fed off the momentum it gained at the end of the first and used a quick 6-3 burst to take its first lead of the contest (24-23) after a tough layup inside by Shakori Jennings-Shuler. However, a shot from distance by the Lions put Emmanuel back in front 26-24.
From that point the Lions used a 15-8 run to head into the locker room leading by nine (41-32).
Emmanuel opened the second half with an 11-6 burst to push its lead to 52-36 with 4:51 remaining on the clock. Converse cut the deficit to 12 (59-47) following a tough hoop-and-harm from Davis, but the Lions did not let up, finishing the quarter with five of the next seven points to send EC into the final frame leading 64-49.
The Valkyries could not gain any ground in the fourth quarter as each time it made a run Emmanuel came back with a counterpunch to extend the lead once again, and gained its biggest lead of the contest (75-53) with 5:55 left in the game. Abigail Lewis connected on a layup off a feed from Davis to trim the margin to 75-62, but that was as close as the score would get as Emmanuel finished with an 11-6 run to capture the 88-69 win.
After knocking down five triples in the first half, Converse found pay dirt only once from behind the arc in the second half and Emmanuel finished the contest with 13 makes from distance, holding a 21-point advantage on three-pointers.
- The Valkyries outscored Emmanuel 26-24 in the paint
- Converse held a 21-19 advantage on points in the paint as it pulled down 22 offensive boards
- This is the first time all season the Valkyries bench has been outscored (23-20)
Converse will complete its seven-game home stand as it plays host to Lees-McRae College on Saturday, December 2. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
