Plethora of Scoring Leads Converse to Win Over Bob Jones

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (1-2) basketball team placed five players in double-figures while dishing out a school record 28 assists en route to an impressive 94-70 win over Bob Jones (0-1) University on Monday evening inside Hannah Gymnasium.

Nigeria Davis posted her second-consecutive double-double, finishing with 13 points and 11 boards to lead the Purple and Gold, while Abigail Lewis and Ashley Sides chipped in 13 points each as well. Sides knocked down four of the Valkyries 12 three-pointers on the evening. Paige Johnson and Marshea Murray eclipsed double-figures with 10 points apiece. Dominique Hill, coming off her school record seven steals against Mars Hill, filled the stat sheet once again, compiling four points, four assists, and four more steals.

The Valkyries shot 33-of-65 (50.8%) for the game, including 12-for-25 (48%) from behind the arc. Free throws were a struggle once again for Converse as it connected on just 16-of-30 attempts for 53.3%. Converse's defense forced the Bruins into 36 turnovers, which resulted in 27 points. CC held a comfortable 34-18 points in the paint margin and a commanding 54-38 bench point advantage.

Bob Jones jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead following a three-pointer from Sarah Thomsen. However, Converse reeled off five of its own, capped off by a deep three from Johnson, to knot the contest at 5-5 early in the opening period. With the score at 15-14 in favor of the Bruins, the Valkyries ripped off a 7-2 run to gain its biggest lead of the opening quarter (21-17) and led 21-19 after one.

The second quarter belonged to the Valkyries as they put up a school record 37 points in the frame, including a 15-2 spurt to open the session, putting the home team ahead by 16 points (36-21) with just under six minutes before the halftime buzzer. That lead grew to as many as 24 (58-34) after Serenity Hunt buried a three at the horn to send Converse into the locker room with all the momentum.

Bob Jones made a bit of a push in the third quarter, outscoring the Valkyries by 10 (28-18) to trail by only 14 points (76-62) heading into the final quarter of action.

However, Converse did not let the score get any closer than that, tallying the initial 10 points of the fourth, capped off by a steal from Sides, who in turn found Lewis for two of the Valkyries 10 fast break points on the evening. Back-to-back threes from Hunt and Sides gave Converse its biggest lead of the game (94-64) with 2:15 remaining in regulation. From that point it was all academic as CC earned its first win of the season, dropping the Bruins by the final of 94-70.

Converse will be back in action on Wednesday, November 15 as it plays host to Puerto Rico-Bayamon. The contest will also serve as a relief effort for the many lives that were affected by the recent hurricanes that roared through Puerto Rico. Tipoff for that contest is scheduled for 7 p.m.
