Strong Start Fades As Converse Falls Against King

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - After a strong first quarter, the Converse Basketball team was unable to keep the momentum as King handed the Valkyries a 68-49 Conference Carolinas defeat at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Valkyries had three players in double-figures.  Hannah Anderson posted a career-high 12 points on 6-9 shooting from the floor.  Paige Johnson connected on two threes on her way to 12 points.  Brianna James chipped in with 10 points and eight rebounds.


1st Quarter

Converse started off the quarter hot with Hannah Anderson knocking down a jumper after a Dominique Hill steal.

King would get on the scoreboard with two freebies before back-to-back threes by Paige Johnson and a jumper by Johnson pushed the Converse lead to 10-2.

Two free throws allowed Converse to lead 12-4 after the first quarter.  Four points allowed is a season-low for the Valkyries defense in a quarter.

2nd Quarter

King came out in the second quarter on a 6-1 run with Erin Horne hitting 1-2 from the stripe.  Horne would end the run with a layup after Paige Johnson swiped an errant pass.

King ended the quarter on a 12-0 run to lead 22-15 at the break.  The Tornado held the Valkyries to three points in the second quarter.

3rd Quarter

Paige Johnson hit a jumper to start the scoring for the Valkyries in the second half during the Tornado 9-2 run.

Brianna James ended the run with two from the charity stripe.  Hannah Anderson hit a jumper midway through the half as Converse trailed 35-21.

King would extend their lead to 48-28 with less than a minute left to go in the third quarter.

4th Quarter

Converse went on a 6-2 run to start the fourth quarter.  Erin Horne started the rally with a layup.  After two free throws by King, Abigail Lewis and Keocia Walker connected on shots.

Back-to-back jumpers by Hannah Anderson inside cut the deficit to 56-40 midway through the quarter.

Keocia Walker completed the old-fashioned three point play to answer the King triple after the media timeout.

Hannah Anderson chipped in with two jumpers and Paige Johnson finished 2-2 at the stripe to end the scoring for the Valkyries as King turned Converse away 68-49.


Converse hosts Pfeiffer in a Conference Carolinas contest on Tuesday, February 21 at 7pm.  It will be the Valkyries' Substance Abuse Awareness Contest.  Wear RED in support of Substance Abuse.
