James' Season-High Not Enough Against Tornado

BRISTOL, TENN. – Brianna James' season-high 29 points were not enough as the Converse Basketball team dropped an 87-64 decision on the road to Conference Carolinas foe King on Tuesday evening.

Brianna James led the Valkyries offensively with a season-high 29 points connecting on 10 field goals.  It is James' 14th career 20 point contest. James added three steals.

Tatum Boggs was the other Valkyrie in double-figures with 12 points. Keocia Walker netted six points with five boards and three steals.  Erin Horne grabbed five rebounds.


1st Quarter

Converse struggled in the early portion of the quarter as King jumped out to an early 17-4 lead at the media timeout.  Paige Johnson had the lone basket for the Valkyries while Tatum Boggs connected on two from the stripe.

Back-to-back three point play opportunities by Brianna James cut into the Tornado lead 23-9 with James' 5-0 run. Keocia Walker went 2-3 from the line after being fouled on a three point attempt.

Brianna James continued to cut into the Tornado lead with a trey to end the quarter for the Valkyries trailing 25-14.

2nd Quarter

Back-to-back baskets from Keocia Walker started the scoring for the Valkyries to cut it to single digits, 27-18 with eight minutes to go in the quarter.

King pushed their lead out to 36-22 midway through the quarter until Brianna James knocked down a three from the right wing on the next possession.

Tatum Boggs hit a jumper off the glass to cut it back to a single digit contest, 36-27, with 2:17 to go in the half.

Brianna James drove the lane and was fouled for the third time in the half and completed the three-point play to cut the deficit to 38-30 with just over a minute to play.

Converse went into the locker room trailing King 40-30. The Valkyries outscored the Tornado 16-15 in the second quarter.

3rd Quarter

On the first possession of the quarter, Hannah Anderson hits a layup.  Keocia Walker picks off a pass at the other end and Brianna James scores to cut the deficit to 40-34 just a minute into the quarter.

King countered with a 10-0 run to push their lead back to a double-digit contest, 50-35 forcing a Converse timeout.

Shaniqua Brown ended the scoring draught for the Valkyries with a jumper off the pass from Tatum Boggs. Boggs knocks down a three before Brianna James finishes the rare four-point play.

Paige Johnson cuts the deficit back to a ten point contest with a layup with a minute to play in the quarter.

King would push things back out to a 15 point lead with a 5-0 run to lead 61-46 heading into the final stanza.

4th Quarter

Three straight Brianna James baskets kept the Valkyries in the contest at 68-54 with 8:05 remaining in the contest.

King continued to build on their lead midway through the quarter with a 15-0 run to push their lead out to 83-54.  Tatum Boggs makes a layup off a steal to end the run with 3:01 to play. Boggs connected on a trey off a Dominique Hill steal to post double-digits points.

Brianna James connected on two from the stripe ended her scoring for the contest with 1:21 in regulation.

Kassidy Moorhouse knocked down a triple to end the scoring for the Valkyries in the contest.


Converse hosts Emmanuel and Erskine on Friday and Saturday, January 27-28.  Emmanuel contest is at 5:30 pm with Erskine on Saturday tipping off at 4pm as part of Alumni Appreciation game.
