BELMONT, N.C. - The Converse Basketball team dropped a tough Conference Carolinas battle on the road to Belmont Abbey, 72-64, on Saturday evening.
The Valkyries trailed as many as 11 points early in the fourth quarter but could not regain the lead after tying things at 62-all with under two minutes to play.

Converse started off the contest on fire leading the Crusaders 11-2. Erin Horne would start the scoring with a layup inside followed by Brianna James with a layup. Erin Horne knocked down a short jumper forcing a Crusader timeout.
Belmont Abbey got on the board with a score followed by Shaniqua Brown hitting a pair of freebies. Kassidy Moorhouse swung the momentum back in the Valkyries' favor knocking down a trifecta for the 11-2 advantage.
The Crusaders stormed back with a 15-0 run to tie things up at 11-all and take the lead at 17-11.
With 8:37 left in the quarter, Converse went on an 8-2 run to regain the lead at 23-22. The spurt was started by a Bri James jumper followed by back-to-back shots from distance from Paige Johnson and James.
The Valkyries and Crusaders would battle back and forth throughout the rest of the half with either team able to push ahead more than two points.
Shaniqua Brown worked hard down low with a minute left in the half by connecting on the front end of a three-point play.
Converse and Belmont Abbey would head into the break knotted up at 32-all.
After a high-scoring first half, the play slowed down in the third with Belmont Abbey outscoring Converse 15-9.
The Crusaders pushed their advantage to a six point lead before Converse would string together a couple of baskets.
Belmont Abbey would take a 47-43 lead heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
The Crusaders would improve upon their lead early as the lead would swell to 11, 56-45, starting the quarter on a 9-2 run.
Converse would start chipping away at the deficit thanks to an 8-0 run by Bri James that took 56 seconds. James started the run at 5:56 with a jumper. After a missed shot at the other end, James nailed a triple. The sophomore finished out the run with an old-fashioned three point play with five minutes left and trailing 56-53.
Belmont Abbey pushed their lead back to six before a 7-2 Converse run knotted things at 62-all. Bri James went 1-2 from the line and Paige Johnson connected on a pair of free throws cut it to a one possession contest with under three minutes to play.
With 1:38 remaining in the contest, Belmont Abbey went 8-10 from the stripe coupled with missed field goals allowed the Crusaders to escape with the victory.
The Valkyries travel to Wilson, N.C. to face Barton in a Conference Carolinas clash. Tip-off is slated for 2pm.
