WILSON, N.C. – Freshman infielder Allison Plafcan turned in a brilliant day on the diamond for the Valkyries, tallying three hits and three RBIs, but it was not enough as Converse (2-28, 0-2 CC) fell to Barton (15-15, 3-3 CC) in Conference Carolinas action on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs won a slugfest in game one by the final of 9-6 before completing the sweep with a 4-0 decision in the nightcap.
GAME ONE: CONVERSE 6, BARTON 9
Converse jumped all over the Bulldogs in the top of the first, posting four runs on four hits and one defensive miscue. Following a groundout Marissa Steadman was hit by a pitch and stole second before coming around to score on Plafcan's first hit of the afternoon. Mariah Blackmon followed that with an RBI double to left. Meredith Quarles singled up the middle to put runners on first and third. Makenzie Wenz capped the inning off with a two-RBI double to right.
However, Barton hit a scoring frenzy in the second and third innings, compiling a total of eight runs to take the 8-4 lead. The Bulldogs were able to connect on nine hits during the outburst. Converse cut the deficit to 8-6 with a pair of runs in the fifth. Plafcan collected two more RBIs in the frame, connecting on a base hit to left, allowing Jena Massing and Moriah Gomez to score.
Barton came back in the home half of the inning with a single run to push the lead out to 9-6 and the Vals couldn't muster anymore offense over the final two innings, falling by that same score.
GAME TWO: CONVERSE 0, BARTON 4
After the offensive outburst in the first game, runs were at a premium during the second game. Both teams went scoreless over the initial three innings of play, but Barton broke through in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs on three hits. Hannah Jones contributed an RBI single before scoring an unearned run on a throwing error by the Vals defense.
Two more runs for Barton in the sixth extended the lead to 4-0 and Converse could only collect one hit for the game, falling to the Bulldogs for the second time on the day.
The Valkyries will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they make the trip to Mount Olive, N.C. to take on the Trojans. Game one is slated to start at 1 p.m.
