Converse Softball Battles Tough Against Barton

DUNCAN, S.C. -  The Converse Softball team battled tough against Barton in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader at home on Saturday afternoon falling 5-0 and 7-6.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORES

Brett Harvey led the Valkyries going 3-6 from the plate with a 2-2 outing in the first contest.  Marissa Steadman and Elizabeth Aguilar tallied two hits each.  Aguilar added a double and a RBI.  Steadman recorded two RBI.

Marissa Steadman took the loss in both contests pitching 8.1 innings picking up three strikeouts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game One: Converse 0, Barton 5

Barton opened the scoring in the top of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.  Barton started the inning with a single and swiped second before moving to third.  Back-to-back outs kept the Bulldogs at-bay.  A fielding error allowed the first run of the contest to score.

Brett Harvey broke up the early no-hit bif in the bottom of the third with a bloop single to center.  Harvey moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Courtney Walls.  Tristan Harvey continued the inning with a walk but both Harveys were stranded on the bases.

Elizabeth Aguilar looked to tie things at 1-all in the bottom of the fourth leading off the inning with a double the left center.  Ashton Coker moved Aguilar to third on a sacrifice bunt.  A lineout and a strikeout ended the rally.

Barton added to their lead with two runs in the top of the fifth with two doubles in the inning.

The Bulldogs added a run in the top of the sixth on a fielder's choice to lead 4-0.  Barton added their final tally of the contest in the top of the seventh.

Brett Harvey added a single to left center in the bottom of the seventh but that was all for the Valkyries.

Game Two: Converse 6, Barton 7

Converse broke the scoreless game in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead.  Brett Harvey started the rally with a single up the middle.  Hannah Boring ripped a base hit down the third base line followed by Savanna Fain loading the bases after being hit by a pitch.

Shelby Bullock picked up a RBI single up the middle for the first tally of the contest.  Marissa Steadman reached on a fielder's choice and allowed the run to score after a bobble by the catcher on the throw home.  Elizabeth Aguilar hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the third run of the inning.

Barton answered in the top of the third inning with three runs of their own on three hits to tie things at three apiece.

The Bulldogs would take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fourth scoring a run without generating a hit.  Barton started the inning with two walks and a hit by pitch.  A fielder's choice allowed the run to come across to score.

Converse responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth.  Shelby Bullock started off the inning with a walk.  Marissa Steadman and Elizabeth Aguilar produced base knocks to load the bases with one out.  Bullock crossed the plate on a wild pitch to knot the score at 4-4.  

Back-to-back fly outs ended the rally for the Valkyries.

After posting a run in the top of the fifth, Barton led 5-4 until the bottom half of the inning.  Hannah Boring reached on a fielder's choice to spark the rally.  Savanna Fain laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached base after the first baseman dropped the throw.

Courtney Walls singled off the pitcher's glove with two outs to load the bases.  Marissa Steadman picked up a RBI single to center field to score Hannah Boring and Savanna Fain to regain the lead, 6-5.

In the top of the sixth, Barton strung together four straight hits with two outs to score two runs to regain the lead, 7-6.

Converse was unable to produce a hit in the sixth or seventh innings as the Valkyries fell 7-6 in the nightcap.

Converse returns to the diamond on Sunday, April 2 in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader against the visiting Mount Olive Trojans.  First pitch is at 12pm.
