SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse College (0-10) field hockey team was defeated 3-0 by Bellarmine (5-8) University on Saturday afternoon at Spartan High. The Knights used two first half goals and one in the second half to round out the victory.
Bellarmine put the pressure on early with two quick shots on goal in the first minute of play, but Ciriaca Petitto was equal to the task, pushing away both scoring opportunities with relative ease. Converse came back with a scoring chance of its own when Flore Samsi beat the defense and fired a shot towards the Knights keeper, but was unable to find the back of the cage.
The majority of the first half was an offensive stalemate until Bellarmine pushed the first score across in the 29th minute when Elle Lichte gathered a loose ball off a shot and stuck it into the box. That lead grew to 2-0 in the 31st minute after Helena Varga posted a score of her own. Bellarmine took the 2-0 lead into the half.
Merit Harris of BU added to the lead with a score in the 40th minute, collecting a rebound and just sneaking it past Petitto. From that point it was all academic as neither team found a rhythm on offense and Bellarmine held on to the 3-0 win.
Samsi led the Valkyries with two shots, while Sarah Healy and Victoria Bailey each added one shot apiece. Mandi Isom tallied three shots for the Knights. Petitto played all 70 minutes in goal, allowing three scores and tallying seven saves. Bellarmine held a 14-4 advantage with shots, including 10-2 shots on goal. Both teams were awarded six penalty corners each.
The Valkyries will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they host Molloy. Weather permitting, that contest is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
