ERIE, PA. – The Converse College (0-8) field hockey team fell 6-2 to the Mercyhurst (5-5) Lakers on Sunday afternoon on Tulio Field.
Mercyhurst scored six goals by five different players, while the Valkyries earned goals from Marina Montes-Nino and Flore Samsi. Morgan Sudweeks was credited with an assist on the afternoon. The Lakers pushed ahead on the score board early, getting a goal from Taylor Balser in just the second minute of action.
That lead ballooned to 2-0 when Leah Rogers redirected a save by Ciriaca Petitto and placed a volley shot into the back of the cage. Montes-Nino cut the deficit in half with a score of her own in the 23rd minute, blasting a shot past the Lakers keeper. However, Mercyhurst tallied two more goals in the first 35 to take a 4-1 lead into halftime.
Two more scores in the first five minutes of the second half extended the MU lead to 6-2 before Samsi took a brilliant pass from Sudweeks in the 51st minute and beat the keeper to cut the score to 6-2. Unfortunately, that was the last goal scored by either side and Mercyhurst escaped with the 6-2 victory.
The Lakes out shot Converse 27 shots to eight, Mercyhurst would post 18 shots in the first half and nine in the second, while Converse posted five in half one and three in half two. Mercyhurst was able to earn three times as many corners as Converse posting nine to the three the Valkyries earned.
The Valkyries will be back in action on Wednesday, October 4 as they host Limestone. That game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.
