GREENSBURG, PA. – Following a two-week hiatus in action, the Converse College (0-7) field hockey team took to the field on Friday afternoon and came up on the losing end of a 5-1 decision at the hands of Seton Hill University (3-6). The Griffins tallied three first half goals and never looked back en route to the victory.
The Griffins got on the board early when Maia Cheeks posted a goal at the 3:43 mark of the first. That lead grew to 2-0 with a Molly Childress goal in the 10th minute of action and Cheeks made it 3-0 with her second goal in the 27th minute.
Cassandra Bravo looked poised to put the Vals on the board in the 19th minute, but her shot was smothered by the SHU keeper and Converse failed to post a goal on the ensuing penalty corner.
Following the brief intermission Seton Hill padded its lead with a goal in the 49th minute by Zyah Newsome and less than 10 minutes later took a 5-0 lead with another score from Childress.
Converse was finally able to break through at the 65:13 mark of the second period when Marina Montes-Nino took a pass from Victoria Bailey and found the back of the cage. However, that would be the last goal scored as Converse fell by the final of 5-1.
Seton Hill outshot the Valkyires by a total of 17-8, including an 11-5 advantage with shots on goal. The Griffins were awarded 14 penalty corners to Converse's 10. Sarah Healy and Madison Conlon registered two shots each to lead CC, while Montes-Nino notched the lone goal.
Converse will be back in action on Sunday, October 1 as it travels to take on Mercyhurst. Faceoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
