BELMONT, N.C. – Playing Belmont Abbey for the second time in five days, the Converse College Field Hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Crusaders on Saturday morning at Alumni Field. The Valkyries fall to 0-4 on the season.
Converse threatened to score early on, but back-to-back shots by Bec Amedee and Denelle Williams were pushed away by the Crusaders keeper, leaving the game knotted at 0-0. The Abbey was presented a chance to break into the scoring column at the 21:05 mark of the opening half, but Angelina Perrone's shot was knocked away by Ciriaca Petitto. BAC put one more shot on goal in the first half, but it too was handled by Petitto to send the two teams in to the locker room scoreless.
However, the Crusaders were finally able to put a mark on the scoreboard early in the second half as Marissa Olmos was able to squeak the ball into the back of the box, giving the Crusaders the lead. Just over three minutes later Olmos added her second score of the contest, extending the BAC lead to 2-0 at the 42:22 point of the final frame of play.
Converse continued to push but was unable to register a single shot the rest of the way, dropping the match 2-0. Petitto (0-4) took the loss after allowing the two goals while collecting seven saves.
Converse will be back in action on Wednesday, September 13 as it travels to Newberry for a 7 p.m. contest.
