SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Converse College Field Hockey team opened the home portion of its 2017 schedule with a tough 3-1 loss at the hands of Seton Hill on Sunday afternoon. Flore Samsi recorded the first goal in program history as she banged home a rebound at the 49:04 mark of the contest.
Coming off a disappointing start to the season, the Valkyries defense turned up the heat, holding a potent Griffin offense to only three goals on 11 total shots. Marina Montes-Nino led the way with four shots and two on goal, while Samsi also added a shot and the lone goal in the defeat. Mackenzie Nalepa posted three shots and one goal for SH, while Rachael Cobo and Maia Cheeks each added a goal apiece.
Cobo broke a scoreless tie with 21:14 remaining, gaining a rebound off a previous shot and sticking it in the back of the cage. Just over four minutes later Cheeks ballooned the lead to 2-0 after taking a pass from Molly Childress into the box and beating the keeper with a one-timer. The teams would head into the locker room with that same score.
At the 49:04 mark of the contest Samsi got the home crowd on its feet with a blistering shot that screamed past the goalie and cut the Griffin lead in half. However, that would be the last goal Converse scored. Nalepa added a goal with just over a minute remaining to make the final margin of victory 3-1 in favor of the Griffins.
Ciriaca Petitto took the tough loss, playing all 70 minutes in goal, while allowing three goals and collecting four saves. Jane Eberhardt picked up the win after playing the first half between the posts.
Converse will be back in action tomorrow as it plays host to Belmont Abbey College. The contest is set to begin at 7 p.m.
