SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Converse (2-2) acro and tumbling team showed great effort but could not complete the upset against three-time defending national champion, Baylor on Wednesday evening inside Hannah Gymnasium. The Valkyries showed poise and determination throughout the meet, but BU used a dominant second half to pull out the 280.125-266.555 victory.
Baylor started the meet with a slight lead after the compulsory event (37.7-36.5) as it took a clean sweep in all four heats. The Acro event was very closely judged, but the Bears took the event by the score of 28.65-28.25. The Valkyries were able to pick up a win in the first heat (5 element) with a score of 9.45-9.35.
Converse held its own in the pyramid event, tying the Bears with a total of 29.15 after the event's three heats. The Bears led overall by the score of 95.5-93.9 following the first half of action.
Baylor opened the second half by adding distance to the running score with a toss (28.6-27.0) and tumbling event win (56.925-52.175), taking the meet into the final team event. Converse turned in a brilliant performance during the night's final event, setting a new program high with a tally of 93.48, but it was not enough as Baylor scored a 99.10 to make the final count 280.125-266.555 in favor of the guests.
The Valkyries total score of 266.555 is also a new program record, while Converse also set a new standard in the compulsory (36.5), pyramid (29.15), and tumbling (52.175) events.
Converse will return to action on Saturday, March 17 as it hosts Georgetown College. That meet is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. inside Hannah Gymnasium.
