SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Converse Acrobatics and Tumbling program has announced the addition of 23 student-athletes for the 2017 inaugural signing class for head coach Keegan Johnson.
Six of those athletes come from the state of South Carolina and two are local talents from nearby Boiling Springs High School.
Coach Johnson was able to build upon a successful November signing period, in which she signed ten athletes. Johnson signed an additional thirteen athletes in April and looks to translate her recruiting success into a strong first year program.
"I am extremely happy with our inaugural roster. I cannot wait for these athletes to begin competing and am very excited for what the future holds for this program," said Coach Johnson. Johnson is very optimistic for the programs first season and is ready to combat the challenges of a new program. "I believe we are going to have a solid first year. My goal is to be as competitive as possible throughout our first season and continue to progress each meet."
Her signees seem to agree. There is a clear sense of determination, drive, and excitement surrounding her athletes, with many of them already training, skill building, and asking questions well in advance, according to Coach Johnson.
The addition of Acrobatics & Tumbling at Converse has created opportunities for female athletes throughout the country. Of the twenty-three total signees, there are athletes spanning twelve different states, from California to Massachusetts. Although many signees are miles away, several have already gotten a glimpse of life as a Converse Valkyrie. Many of them participated in Converse Scholars Day, Spring Spectacular, and visited campus several times. The team has also been able to connect with each other well before officially starting their college careers.
"The comradery between my athletes is already very apparent. Many of them are reaching out to each other and connecting with their teammates, which is great, and will definitely help us build as a team moving forward," said Coach Johnson.
Johnson is also extremely pleased with the caliber of student-athletes she has signed. Many are entering Converse with impressive high school statistics and are looking to continue their success at Converse and beyond. "All of my athletes have aspirations of achieving great success after Converse. They are proud to attend an all-women's college. I cannot wait to watch them grow as individuals and as strong Converse women," said Coach Johnson.
"The future is very bright for this team and I cannot wait for them to make history. Go Valkyries!"
