Under the direction of Director of Athletics, Joy Couch, Converse Athletics is a rapidly growing program with tremendous momentum. Currently Converse sponsors 11 varsity sports including Basketball, Cross Country, Equestrian, Lacrosse, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Tennis, and Volleyball.
The Converse College Valkyries compete at the highest level of athletics competition of any women's college in the nation at the NCAA Division II level. Converse competes in the Conference Carolinas, which was formerly known as the Carolina-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC).
As an NCAA Division II institution, Converse offers academic-based, need-based and athletic-based scholarships to qualified student-athletes.
The Converse College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics supports the mission of the College by providing the female student-athletes the opportunity to develop their talents athletically and academically. The priority of the program is the well being of the student-athlete, as an individual and a team member, while at the same time maintaining the highest standards of integrity, good sportsmanship, ethical conduct and presenting a positive public image for the College.
The philosophy of the Converse College Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is to reaffirm the convictions of our founders so that we provide a powerful environment for a Converse woman to reach her full athletic potential. We offer Converse students the opportunity to participate in a competitive sports environment that will help them learn the value of teamwork and leadership. The strengths of our student-athletes will be measured not only by their physical abilities but also, as our founder’s vision affirms, by their ability “to see clearly, decide wisely, and act justly.”
The Athletic Department encourages the growth of each student – emotionally, socially, physically, and academically. Our athletic program enhances our strong academic curriculum. We are resolved to continue to promote excellence in women’s education.
The Athletic Department will follow the letter and spirit of the rules and regulations of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). We will ensure that all athletic contests, practices, and related activities are conducted in compliance with the principles of fair play and amateur athletic competition as defined by the NCAA.
The Athletic Department will promote pride in our college among faculty and students and our surrounding community. In addition, we will demonstrate a strong obligation to, and appreciation of, the college and the alumni and friends who support the program.
